Working with Smart Investments

Smart Investments challenges notions of how finance typically looks: rigid services often dominated by white men in suits. The firm's structure is not built on a hierarchy; rather, it is cooperative and collaborative in nature.

Smart Investments' core tenet is being an anti-oppressive and anti-racist space, for staff as well as clients. Committed to providing equitable opportunities for employees, Smart Investments pays thriving wages and nurtures its team through a lens of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. We learn from those who are oppressed, marginalized and/or racialized—including Black and Indigenous folks, people of colour, people who are disabled, queer, trans, non-binary, people whose bodies are shamed—so that we can continue to serve these communities better.

Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI)

We value each piece of this important acronym, to create an inclusive space where everyone can thrive.

Diversity in the workplace, without a lens of justice and equity, can mean that marginalized folks are part of a team, perhaps on a tokenized basis, or without a voice in decision-making. Instead of tokenized diversity, we aim for an equitably inclusive space where all team members are invited to the table for less hierarchical decision-making.

If you are:

  • Indigenous

  • Black

  • Racialized, or a Person of Colour

  • LGBTQ2SIA+ (Lesbian; Gay; Bisexual; Trans; Queer; Two-Spirit; Intersex; Asexual)

  • Non-binary

  • Managing gender or name changes

  • Neurodivergent

  • Low income

  • Living with disabilities (visible or invisible)

  • Speaking English as a second, third, or additional language

  • Dealing with marginalization of any kind

you are wholly welcome here. We aim to make our services—and employment opportunities—available with low or no barriers. You deserve employment security, no matter what your background or lived experiences are.

CURRENT OPPORTUNITIES

Associate Financial Advisor Summer 2024

We do not anticipate filling this role particularly quickly; finding someone who is the "right fit" is paramount, and might take a long time. We are not desperate for a Financial Advisor to join the firm; we just know that we will need more Financial Advisors on the team as our client base continues to grow, so we're putting "feelers" out with a long time horizon as a possibility.

The specific job title, job description, and pay structure will be customized with and for the successful applicant, based on their strengths, areas of interest, and desired combination of salary and/or commission. This is our organization's first job posting of this nature, therefore it will be a work in progress to find the right "compensation recipe" for the successful applicant.

What will this role look like and who are we seeking for the role? This is a person-first job posting, rather than a job-first posting. We envision finding the right person for this role, and then building the job description around that person's strengths, areas of interest, and desired compensation structure. Examples of items this job description may include:

  • Servicing select blocks of Smart Investments' existing clients, e.g., Group RRSP plan members, clients within certain age demographics, clients with certain ranges of investable assets, clients with specific account types

  • Onboarding new clients

  • Establishing / executing schedules of regular client contact

  • Portfolio reviews for existing clients

  • Meeting preparation for Kelsey, including portfolio analysis, and/or rebalancing research

  • Insurance applications with clients

  • Identifying new business opportunities within existing client base

  • Financial literacy ("outreach") workshops for the community

  • Optional, TBD: Building your own book of business (onboarding new clients from start to finish, servicing thereafter), if you wish? Whether you do your own administrative work (e.g., processing trades and KYC updates yourself) on this book, or whether our Operations Team assists you with this, will depend on whether you opt for more salary and/or more commission

Requirements

  • Mutual fund license in BC

  • 1 or more years working as a Financial Advisor and/or Licensed Investment Funds Advisor

How to apply: Please email why you are interested in working at Smart Investments to kelsey@smartinvestments.bc.ca. Before all else, we are seeking someone who is the right fit for our organization. A commitment to principles of social justice and inclusion are a ‘must’, so before anything else, we would like to know if you'd be a good fit with our team in that regard. If/when you do decide to apply, we welcome applications in the traditional format of a cover letter and resume; or a creative format, if you prefer (e.g., a video, slideshow, or other creative method).
